Background:
The AI in Transportation Great Idea Group (AI GIG) was approved by the Council Leadership Team (CLT) at the ITE Annual Meeting in Orlando, Florida, in August 2025. This approval followed a presentation and discussion at the CLT meeting, and a workshop titled "Harnessing AI for Transportation Safety and Operations: Challenges, Opportunities, and the Future." The workshop provided an opportunity for participants to highlight key areas of need in the AI space and to identify future action items for the AI GIG.
Purpose:
The AI in Transportation GIG will:
1) Foster focused and agile exploration of emerging AI topics,
2) Expand understanding of AI policy, ethics, governance, and skills development,
3) Complement (not duplicate) existing council/committee work, and
4) Act as an incubator for future initiatives within ITE.
