About ITE

AI in Transportation Workflows

The AI in Transportation Workflows series, developed by ITE’s AI in Transportation Great Idea Group (AI GIG), shifts the conversation on artificial intelligence from broad possibilities to practical applications. Each workflow illustrates how AI can be incorporated into existing engineering and planning tasks to help practitioners organize and analyze data, find and synthesize information, identify patterns, and develop reviewable outputs. Across the series, the emphasis is not on replacing existing established practices, but showing where AI can make them more efficient, accessible, and useful.

AI Supports the Work. Transportation Professionals Remain in Control.

A common principle connects each workflow: AI supports the work and transportation professionals remain in control. Practitioners verify inputs and outputs, apply professional judgement, and retain responsibility for decisions and outcomes. The workflows emphasize the need for reliable data, traceable results, authoritative sources, and human-in-the-loop review as foundations for responsible AI use. Together, these eight workflows provide approachable examples of how ITE members are integrating AI into their own work, and how other members can use AI effectively.
