The Industry's Go-To Reference for Estimating Development-Generated Travel

The Trip Generation Manual (TGM), 12th Edition, is ITE’s most widely used and trusted resource for forecasting the number and type of trips generated by land development. Whether you’re planning a school, shopping center, warehouse, or mixed-use community, the TGM provides the essential data and tools to help you anticipate travel demand, design infrastructure solutions, and support transportation decisions with confidence.

Backed by more than four decades of empirical data, this flagship manual is a critical tool for transportation professionals across public and private sectors.

What's New in the 12th Edition?

The 12th Edition represents a major update designed to reflect the changing landscape of travel behavior and development. Key enhancements include:

  • Over 550 new study sites added across a wide range of land uses.
  • Removal of all pre-1990 data for improved relevance and accuracy.
  • Nine new land use codes, including boutique fitness studios, travel centers, and high-volume fast-food restaurants.
  • Revised land use definitions and updated independent variables.
  • Dedicated chapter on emerging trends affecting travel patterns in the post-pandemic era.
  • Stronger integration with the Trip Generation Handbook (ITE Recommended Practice).

This edition is more reflective of today’s development realities and provides users with data they can trust for site planning, impact analysis, and long-range forecasting.

Your Digital Advantage: ITETripGen Web-Based App

Access to the ITETripGen web-based app—a powerful platform that puts the entire TGM database at your fingertips—is available for separate purchase and is strongly recommended for users seeking dynamic, on-the-go analysis tools. With intuitive features designed for both analysis and communication, the app allows users to:

  • Access a PDF Version of the 11th edition of the TGM as well as a PDF version of the Trip Generation Handbook, 3rd edition
  • View all land use codes, plots, and descriptive statistics
  • Access to additional modal and truck trip data plots
  • Filter the data set based on geographic location, age of data, and development size
  • Hover over data points to view the collection year
  • Explore modal, person, and truck trip generation plots
  • Access pass-by trip data and time-of-day distributions
  • Generate and export visual data summaries for reports and presentations

Next Evolution in Transportation Impact Analysis

Now Available! The TripGen API, developed by Transoft Solutions for ITE, allows for third-party transportation engineering software providers to link their products directly to the ITE TripGen app and gives users to extract data needed for analysis.

ITE has initially partnered with PTV Group to offer integration through their software platform, PTV Vistro. The ITE TripGen API allows users to import ITE Trip Generation data for proposed project land uses directly within the software and apply the results in integrated transportation impact analysis workflows.

Through PTV’s Vistro software, users can select the land use characteristics, independent variable and time period. Then, choose to apply the average rate or fitted curve equation and view the results in Vistro’s trip generation table and on the ITE formatted data plot graphics.
