Balancing Transit Speeds, Bike Safety, and Pedestrian Comfort

ITE to Develop New Recommended Practice on Balancing Transit Speeds, Bike Safety, and Pedestrian Comfort at Bus Stops

ITE is initiating the development of a new Recommended Practice (RP) called Bus Stop Design Guide: Balancing Transit Speeds, Bike Safety, and Pedestrian Comfort focused on balancing comfort, safety, and operations at bus stops. This effort responds to growing practitioner demand for clearer guidance on how to design transit facilities that support reliable service while creating comfortable, accessible environments for people walking, biking, and using transit.

About the Recommended Practice

Transit stations and stops are often complex multimodal environments where competing needs, including transit speed and reliability, bicycle safety, and pedestrian comfort, must be carefully balanced. Existing guidance is often fragmented or mode-specific, making it difficult for practitioners to select appropriate treatments based on context.

This new RP will provide a unified and adaptable framework to support decision-making and design at bus stops. The document is expected to include:

  • Decision-making tools to help identify appropriate treatments based on corridor context and modal priorities

  • Design guidance for common bus stop and station treatments

  • Practical considerations drawn from real-world applications

Call for Volunteers – Recommended Practice Committee

ITE is seeking volunteers with experience in bus stop design and active transportation to serve on the Recommended Practice (RP) Committee that will lead the development and approval of this document. RP Committee members will collaborate to draft, review, and refine the guidance through ITE’s consensus-based development process.

Participation is open to ITE members and non-members representing:

  • Public agencies

  • Transit agencies

  • Consulting firms

  • Academia

  • Other organizations with a material interest in bus stop planning and design

ITE strives to maintain balanced representation across all RP committees to ensure diverse perspectives and expertise.

ITE is also seeking volunteers interested in serving as external reviewers to provide review and comment on draft versions of the RP.

If you are interested in either role (RP Committee member or Reviewer), please complete the RP Interest Form by February 13, 2026. Applicants will be asked to submit a one-page résumé, a brief statement of interest, a summary of relevant experience, and contact information.
