State Bicycle Facility and/or Signal Related Resources

Very few of the State Department of Transportations have developed specific standards for the application, design, or operation of bicycle signals.  However, given the interest in using these indications, new standards can be expected over the next few years. In the meantime, reviewing both bicycle facility and/or signal design documents can be helpful in determining design guidance for bicycle signals currently.

The following table shows a listing of relevant bicycle facility and/or signal design documents from each state, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico, and these could be used as a starting point for understanding bicycle signals where you live or work:

*Some states include master planning documents while some states specifically reference traffic signal design standards and/or techincal specifications even if there’s no specific mention of addressing multimodal conflicts with traffic signal design.
