ITE Webinar: Safer Land-Use Series: Multimodal Development Review

When: September 1, 2026 | 2:00 -- 3:00 PM ET

This webinar is led by the ITE Complete Streets Council.

Webinar Description:

Transportation injuries emerge from cascading decisions and contexts that can multiply transportation risk. For example, auto-oriented land use patterns located along high-speed arterial corridors simultaneously increase exposure (more and longer vehicle trips), likelihood (more conflict opportunities), and severity (higher operating speeds).

This webinar explores how better integrating land use and transportation planning can reverse these risk multipliers to be safety multipliers through demand, speed, and conflict management levers, creating environments where safety is built into the system and all risk factors are proactively reduced through coordinated land use and transportation planning.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe how land use and transportation decisions influence transportation risk by affecting exposure (the number and distance of vehicle trips), likelihood (the frequency of conflicts), and severity (the consequences of those conflicts).
  • Recognize common land use and roadway patterns that act as transportation risk multipliers, particularly auto-oriented development along high-speed arterial corridors.
  • Evaluate planning, zoning, travel demand management, and street design strategies that reduce transportation risk by lowering exposure, reducing conflict opportunities, and managing crash severity.
  • Apply an integrated land use and transportation framework to support Vision Zero and Safe System implementation during planning, policy, and project development.
