ITE Webinar: Beyond the Crosswalk: Practical Technologies and Low-Cost Infrastructure for Pedestrian Safety

When: September 15, 2026 | 2:00 -- 3:30 PM ET

This webinar is led by the ITE Complete Streets Council & the Pedestrian and Bicycle Committee

Webinar Description:

Communities throughout North America continue to experience rising pedestrian fatalities while facing limited funding and increasing pressure to deliver safety improvements quickly. Although major capital projects remain an important part of long-term safety programs, many agencies are demonstrating that meaningful reductions in pedestrian risk can be achieved through targeted, low-cost infrastructure improvements and emerging technologies.

This webinar will feature four local agencies that have successfully implemented practical, cost-effective pedestrian safety countermeasures. Case studies will highlight treatments including enhanced pedestrian lighting, AI-enabled adaptive lighting, passive pedestrian detection, and other innovative visibility and warning technologies that improve driver awareness and pedestrian conspicuity at crossings. Presenters will discuss how candidate locations were identified, how treatments were selected and deployed, implementation and maintenance considerations, funding strategies, and lessons learned from real-world applications. The webinar will demonstrate how agencies have combined traditional engineering countermeasures with emerging technology to improve safety while advancing Complete Streets and Vision Zero objectives.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the factors agencies use to identify candidate locations and select appropriate safety treatments.
  • Learn how low-cost infrastructure improvements and emerging technologies can improve pedestrian visibility and crossing safety.
  • Recognize implementation, maintenance, and operational considerations associated with AI-enabled lighting, passive pedestrian detection, and related technologies.
  • Identify strategies for integrating innovative pedestrian safety countermeasures into Complete Streets, Vision Zero, and systemic safety programs.
