When: June 16, 2026 | 2:00 -- 3:30 PM ET
This webinar is led by the ITE Younger Member Committee and TFARM.
Webinar Description:
Transportation forensics applies engineering principles to investigate crashes, traffic incidents, roadway design issues, work zone maintenance of traffic design, and other transportation-related events. Transportation engineers serving as forensic experts may assist attorneys, insurance companies, public agencies, and courts by analyzing evidence, evaluating engineering practices, and providing expert opinions.
This Back to Basics webinar provides a foundational overview of transportation forensics and expert witness services. Participants will learn the role of transportation engineers in forensic investigations, the differences between fact and expert witnesses, common types of transportation-related cases, and the general process of conducting engineering analyses and communicating findings. The session will also discuss ethical considerations, the litigation process, and potential career pathways for transportation professionals interested in forensics and the expert witness field.
Learning Objectives:
Differentiate between fact witnesses and expert witnesses and describe their respective roles in transportation-related legal proceedings.
Explain the basic process of a transportation forensic investigation, including evidence collection, engineering analysis, report preparation, and testimony.
Identify common types of transportation cases that utilize forensic engineering expertise and recognize opportunities for transportation professionals to contribute to expert witness services.
