ITE Webinar: AI in Practice: Organizational Needs, Workflows, and Professional Development

This webinar is led by the ITE AI in Transportation Great Idea Group (AI GIG).

When: November 5, 2026 | 2:00 - 3:30 p.m. ET

Webinar Description:

How can transportation professionals incorporate artificial intelligence (AI) into everyday work while maintaining quality, accountability, and professional judgment?

This webinar will provide a high-level overview of the resources and accomplishments of ITE's AI in Transportation Great Idea Group (AI GIG). Drawing on selected, illustrative examples from the group's eight published AI-assisted workflows spanning safety analysis, traffic impact analysis, traffic signal operations, ITS architecture, and more, attendees will explore how AI can support existing engineering and planning tasks while practitioners verify outputs and maintain responsibility for the final work product.

The webinar will examine the importance of source verification and professional review when using AI to support, rather than replace, engineering judgment and decision-making. Through examples drawn from published AI GIG resources, presenters will demonstrate practical applications of AI in transportation engineering and planning while emphasizing the continued role of practitioners in ensuring quality and accuracy.

This webinar will also examine the organizational considerations for responsible AI use, including tool approval, sensitive data protection, staff development, quality assurance, and disclosure. Attendees will learn how the AI GIG's AI Readiness Assessment and its broader efforts in AI literacy, organizational policy, the practitioner pulse survey, and Vibe Coding can support individual and organizational learning. The webinar will distinguish between publicly available resources and initiatives still in development.

Participants will leave knowing where to find available AI GIG materials, how to explore applications relevant to their work, and how to continue learning and sharing these resources within their organizations while maintaining sound professional judgment and accountability. The session will also recognize the volunteers who developed these resources.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify the AI GIG's principal resources and illustrative applications of AI in transportation engineering and planning tasks.
  • Describe the importance of source verification and professional review when using AI to support, not replace, engineering judgment and decision-making.
  • Recognize key considerations for organizational AI policies, including tool approval, data protection, quality assurance, and disclosure.
  • Identify ways to access and share AI GIG resources, strengthen AI literacy, and continue learning while retaining professional judgment and accountability.
