ITE CONSULTANTS COUNCIL NELSON J. SHAFFER DISTINGUISHED CONSULTANT AWARD
Purpose
The ITE Consultants Council Nelson J. Shaffer Distinguished Consultant Award is awarded annulally to recognize a consultant for outstanding contributions to the transportation engineering/planning profession. The purpose of the award is to recognize an individual who has served as an inspiration to others by means of continued dedication to the profession and his/her community.
Nelson J. Shaffer was a fellow and life member of ITE and served on the Executive Committee of the Consultants Council for almost 15 years. During his nearly 50 years of Institute membership, Nelson served as the President of the Mid-Atlantic Section (MASITE) and the Mid-Colonial District, was the Vice Chair of ITE’s Advocacy Committee, and served on the International Board of Direction. The Nelson J. Shaffer Distinguished Consultant Award continues Nelson’s legacy by recognizing his leadership, and untiring contributions to ITE and the transportation industry.
Eligibility
The award nominees should meet the following eligibility requirements:
Nominee is a member of ITE International
Nominee has served ITE with dedication and commitment
The nominee is respected by peers for contributions and service to the transportation profession and his/her community
Award
Award will consist of a trophy or plaque given at the Annual Meeting and Exposition, as well as recognition in ITE Journal.
Submission/Selection Process:
Submit a nomination letter (no longer than two pages) identifying the candidate (name, title, position, name of firm, address,) and addressing the evaluation criteria (below).

An award committee from Consultants Council members will review the nominations and select a recipient based on how well the person meets the evaluation criteria. The committee may seek additional information from the applicant during the evaluation process.
Selected recipient may participate in the Consultants Council activities through the next calendar year (if recipient’s firm is not a Consultants Council member).
Evaluation/Judging Criteria
The following criteria will be considered by the committee:
Exhibits leadership skills
Exhibits a commitment to the advancement of the profession
Applies innovative ideas to the profession/volunteer role
Demonstrates impact from the individual’s involvement
