Traffic Signal Timing Webinar Series: Signal Timing Strategies for Pedestrians

When: Thursday, December 2, 2021 -- 3:00 - 4:30 PM ET

This webinar is led by the ITE Traffic Engineering Council.

Webinar Description:

This webinar will focus on a variety of signal timing strategies to provide for the safe and efficient movement of pedestrians through signalized intersections. Balancing the needs for pedestrians with the demands of vehicular traffic has long been an issue for signal operations engineers; in recent years, some new strategies have been developed and some old strategies revisited. The webinar will provide technical information about several strategies, including:

  • Leading Pedestrian Intervals
  • Two-Stage Pedestrian Crossings
  • Exclusive Pedestrian Phases (including the “Scramble” or “Barnes’ Dance”
  • Protected Pedestrian Movements using the Flashing Yellow Arrow Left Turn Display
  • Protected Pedestrian Movements using Right Turn Signals
  • Extended Press Pedestrian Detectors
  • Minimizing Pedestrian Delay in Coordinated Systems

The webinar will also include a case study of the deployment of Leading Pedestrian Intervals at every intersection in a downtown core.

Learning Objectives:
Attendees of this webinar will be able to:

  • Recognize the issues affecting pedestrians at signalized intersections
  • Understand the safety benefits and operational considerations of Leading Pedestrian Intervals
  • Learn how intersection phasing can be modified to improve pedestrian safety and mobility
  • Understand the constraints of pedestrian operations within coordinated arterial systems and how best to mitigate pedestrian concerns.
