Running Successful Student Chapters: Experiences from NYU and Cal Poly SLO

ITE is committed to developing the next generation of thought leaders in transportation. A critical element of these efforts is the engagement of ITE student chapters. There are significant differences in the form and function of student chapters based on characteristics of the universities, the degree of involvement from faculty and practitioners, and other factors. This webinar highlights effective strategies for running an ITE student chapter from the 2019 and 2020 ITE Student Chapters of the Year.

Student leaders from the California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo and New York University Tandon ITE student chapters will share their experiences in running a successful chapter. The students will share their knowledge about outreach, event planning, on-campus engagement, membership retainment, and leadership. Furthermore, students will discuss the implications of the COVID-19 pandemic to their respective chapters. They will explain how they navigated the transition to online activities and how the pandemic has affected events and engagement. The presentation will be followed by a question-and-answer session where students and faculty advisors can share insights as to best practices, challenges, and lessons learned.

• Bridge the gap between undergraduate and graduate student involvement in student chapters.
