Level of Service Concepts in Multimodal Environments -- Traffic Engineering Manual: Chapter 5

When: Thursday, April 8, 2021 -- 2:00 - 3:30 PM ET

This webinar was developed by the ITE Traffic Engineering Council.

Webinar Description:

This webinar is intended to discuss how the concept of level of service can be applied to multimodal environments and why doing so requires a shift in perspective from traditional approaches to level of service where auto use predominates. Well understood performance measures that relate directly to how well a transportation system is operating as a whole need to be supplemented by other measures that address the quality of travel from the travelers perspective especially when evaluating non-auto modes. The webinar attempts to distill the characteristics which contribute to level of service for different modes and to present the nature of trade-offs that must be considered in multi-modal environments to design and operate multimodal infrastructure in urban settings.

Learning Objectives:
Attendees of this webinar will be able to:

  • Differentiate between system focus and user focus when evaluating the performance of transportation networks
  • Review level of service concepts as commonly applied to different modes of transportation
  • Categorize Multimodal Environments and relate to the function of urban streets
  • Explore the role of Highway Capacity Manual Urban Streets Methodology as an aid to decision-making

  • Michael Carroll, P.E., Deputy Managing Director - Philadelphia's Office of Transportation and Infrastructure Systems | Philadelphia's Office of Transportation and Infrastructure Systems
