MUTCD Summer Webinar Series Overview:

Now that the MUTCD 11th Edition has been published, what’s next? One step is this MUTCD Summer Series of webinars created by members of ITE’s technical councils and committees to share their perspectives on key changes and new items in the 11th Edition. Although not intended to be a comprehensive review of the entire content of the new Manual, these webinars will provide transportation professionals information on the revisions and their application(s).

Webinar Description:

This webinar will summarize the additions and changes to MUTCD Part 8 in the 11th edition. It applies to heavy rail passenger, freight, and Light Rail Transit (LRT) crossings.

This session will provide an overview of the changes to evaluating the installation and maintenance of traffic control devices at grade crossings. Participants will understand the roles and responsibilities of diagnostic teams when evaluating grade crossings. It will cover the updates to the MUTCD for passive traffic control and the proper use and placement of signage and markings at grade crossings. The webinar will include traffic signal preemption at or near grade crossings and the safe and effective operation of rail and sidewalk traffic at grade crossings.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify the roles and responsibilities of the Diagnostic Teams- a group of knowledgeable representatives of the parties of interest in a grade crossing or group of grade crossings
  • Review the 11th edition changes to signage and pavement marking at grade crossings.
  • Discuss safe and effective operation and installation of traffic control at pathways or sidewalks at or near a grade crossing
  • Review a summary of updated revisions made to the MUTCD 11th Edition Part 8
