Webinar Background:

This webinar provides an overview of the content of the recently released Highway-Rail Crossing Handbook, 3rd Edition. The Handbook was developed by ITE under contract to the United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) and covers all aspects of highway-rail crossing planning and design including the appropriate use of traffic control devices.

The webinar will provide will provide a brief overview of the key content of the Handbook including characteristics of the crossing environment and users and physical and operational changes that can be made at crossings to enhance the safety and operation of both highway and rail traffic. The following Handbook chapters will be discussed: Introduction & Glossary; Engineered Treatments; Treatment Selection Guidance; Project Implementation; Maintenance, Management, & Operations; and Special Topics. The Webinar will also include a synopsis of the ITE Recommended Practice Preemption of Traffic Signals Near Railroad Crossings that is currently under development and has been incorporated in part into the Handbook.
