The Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) and AARP began a relationship in August 2006
when AARP Executive Board Member, Dr. George Rowan spoke at ITE’s Annual Meeting and
Exhibit in Milwaukee, WI, USA. Dr. Rowan’s address to the ITE audience focused on elevating
the importance of incorporating older driver and pedestrian safety needs into the traffic and
transportation planning processes and the criticality of addressing the mobility and safety
needs of seniors in their communities.
The Pedestrian Safety and Mobility Audit Guide can be used as a tool before volunteer auditors
go out into the community. The guide can be used to familiarize volunteers with the myriad
technical, administrative, regulatory, social and behavioral issues related to pedestrian safety
and mobility at intersections and road segments.

Active Living
Active living is an approach to community design that integrates physical activity into daily routines. The mission of the Active Living Network is to build a national coalition of leaders who have a stake in the way places are designed and built, and to support their efforts to create and promote activity-friendly communities.
The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the Active Living Network advisory committee and a wide array of partner organizations are creating and growing the Network.
