ITE Membership Criteria


The following criteria are used to process membership at ITE Headquarters.
A membership grade is assigned based on the information provided by the applicant.
 

Application Requirements for Processing
Admissions:
Student Member Must provide information on education (school, degree pursued, expected graduation date, major).
Member
with a transportation-related degree
Applicant with a P.E., P.Eng., or AICP certification and who has a bachelor’s degree or higher in a field related to transportation or traffic engineering or transportation planning must provide a chronological resume to demonstrate 5 years working in the field of transportation and at least 3 years in responsible charge of transportation work.
Member
without a transportation-related degree
Applicant must provide a chronological resume to demonstrate 10 years professional experience, 5 years working in the field of transportation and at least 3 years in responsible charge of transportation work. Applicant may be asked to provide references and additional information.
Institute Affiliate Applicant must not be eligible for a higher grade of membership as described above and must work in a transportation-related area. Applicant must include a resume.

Current members may upgrade membership by applying for transfer.

Transfers: 
Member
with a P.E., P.Eng, or AICP certification
Members who have a degree in a field related to transportation or traffic engineering or transportation planning must provide a chronological resume to demonstrate 5 years working in the field of transportation and at least 3 years in responsible charge of transportation work.
Member
without a P.E., P.Eng, or AICP certification
Applicants without a degree in a field related to transportation or who appear to pursue other non-transportation work must provide a current chronological resume to demonstrate 5 years working in the field of transportation and at least 3 years in responsible charge of transportation work and at least 3 references.
Fellow
with a P.E., P.Eng, or AICP certification
Applicants must have at least 5 years in the grade of Member and must provide a current, chronological resume and at least 3 references.
Fellow
without a P.E., P.Eng, or AICP certification
Applicants must have at least 5 years in the grade of Member and must provide (a) a current, chronological resume and at least 3 references and (b) a P.E. Waiver Request form.*

Applications for transfer to the grade of Fellow are sent to the International Admissions and Transfers Committee for peer review and can take 3 to 4 months to process.

Former members may reactivate membership easily by mail, phone, fax, or e-mail.

Reinstatements All grades of members may reinstate immediately upon request to the last grade held. Applicants must be working in the transportation field, but do not have to reapply. 

Definition of Terms

Transportation or Traffic Engineering Experience; Professional Transportation Experience — Experience that had as its primary purpose the planning (including activity with environmental, economic, social, ecological, legal, and political factors), geometric design, and/or operation of transportation facilities intended to move people and goods.

Sub professional Experience — Positions (a) in which the individual is working under direct supervision or (b) that require only limited technical knowledge and personal responsibility.

Professional Experience — Employment positions that can be classified as professional (i.e., those that can be successfully filled only by a person with a four-year college degree in engineering or related field or equivalent qualifying experience).

Responsible Charge — Definite responsibility for professional work of substantial importance (i.e., responsibility for direction of work where approval for necessary decisions to carry out the work does not require approval of higher authority). At least one year of professional experience not in responsible charge is normally required before responsible charge will be credited.

Transportation Engineering — The application of technology and scientific principles to the planning, functional design, operation, and management of facilities for any mode of transportation in order to provide for the safe, rapid, comfortable, convenient, economical, and environmentally compatible movement of people and goods.

Traffic Engineering — That phase of transportation engineering that deals with the planning, geometric design, and traffic operations of roads, streets, and highways; their networks, terminals, and abutting lands; and relationships with other modes of transportation.
