Sustainable Transportation
■ Implements financially self-sufficient mobility solutions with no environmental harm
■ Meeting, & sometimes redefining, today's mobility needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs
■ Facilitate mode shifts & increase transportation efficiency to reduce GhGs

California's Global Warming Solutions Act of 2006
■ Requires CA to reduce GhG emissions to 1990 levels by 2020
■ 3 Legged Stool for reductions
■ Vehicle Fuel Economy
■ Fuel Carbon Content

Are 3 Legs Enough?
■ 3 Legged Stool for reductions
_ f
■ Vehicle Fuel Economy - CAFE
■ Fuel Carbon Content — 50% < carbon fuels by 2030
■ Vehicle Miles Traveled — Transportation the only sector targeted for reduction, rather than their emissions or fuel consumption
■ 4th leg — Operations
■ An immediate action program
■ Provides a solution today

OPERATIONS: Our 4th Leg
1. Traffic Signal Synchronization: Adjusts the
timing patterns of traffic signals to allow for the least delay and the best possible traffic flow along corridors
2. Transit Signal Priority: Times signals to move the
most people, not vehicles. Reduces competition between transit and cars via direct communications between transit and traffic signals to extend the green or shorten the red light
3. Traffic Operations Centers: Collects and
processes traffic data to produce information used by system operators to initiate control strategies to maximize mobility

ITSA Environmental Task Force
■ Identify & quantify environmental benefits of developing & deploying broadly a suite of transportation technologies that help reduce GhG emissions through efficiency gains in system operations, & VMT reduction
■ Develop a verification procedure to certify transportation projects as offsets that can be traded on carbon markets
