Organizing for Regional Transportation Operations

Case Studies and Executive Guide Conference Additional Resources

In metropolitan areas today, many different groups play a role in how the transportation system functions. Coordination among these groups is essential for developing solutions to regional transportation issues.

Regional Operating Organizations (ROOs) are partnerships among transportation and public safety agencies that provide a platform for interagency coordination and joint delivery of services.

ROOs have had significant impacts on incident and event management, public safety coordination, daily traffic operations, and beyond in regions throughout North America. Although these partnerships take multiple forms, successful ROOs are supported politically, financially, and organizationally. These partnerships often face significant challenges because they represent new roles and approaches to providing services.

ITE, FHWA, and other partners are developing resources to help address these challenges and support ROOs.
