Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the Institute of Transportation Engineers starting the LeadershipITE program?
The Institute recognizes the importance of leadership to great organizations and the need to proactively cultivate these leaders. By establishing a formal leadership program, ITE seeks to secure its own future and provide program participants the tools to successfully lead in their chapters, sections and Districts as well as other organizations and their communities.

How does an individual benefit from participating in the LeadershipITE program?
LeadershipITE participants will acquire the skills of high-level leaders. These competencies, recognized by employers, will enable LeadershipITE participants to advance their careers and acquire leadership positions within ITE, their companies, and other industry and community organizations.

How does an employer benefit from supporting a participant in the LeadershipITE program?
High-level leaders build and sustain great companies and organizations (Collins 2001, Collins and Porras 2004). Additionally, success in the transportation profession requires partnerships with other leaders and organizations. As a program that brings together a diverse group of future leaders and enhances their leadership potential, employers of LeadershipITE participants gain a high-level leader for their organization who will have the network required to build partnerships with other great organizations.

How does the profession benefit from the LeadershipITE program?
Jim Collins, in his collected works, highlights the importance of Level 5 leaders within great organizations. Through LeadershipITE, the Institute seeks to build a base of high-level leaders that can lead the future of transportation. LeadershipITE intends these high-level leaders to use their skills to improve the profession through efforts within ITE and, more importantly, their routine contributions to the profession within their public agencies, private firms, and universities and research organizations.

Team unityHow does ITE benefit from the LeadershipITE program?
Through LeadershipITE, the Institute will develop a cohort of connected cross-discipline leaders, a leadership pipeline, capable of guiding ITE into the future at all levels of the organization. These leaders will position ITE for the future as the organization of choice for transportation professionals.

What is the cost of the program?
Tuition for the program is $2,995. This includes the participant’s full registration at the ITE Spring Technical Conference and the ITE Annual Meeting, a value of approximately $1350. It also includes all course materials and most meals during the workshops. (Participants will be responsible for their own travel, lodging and incidental expenses).

Are applicants required to have financial support from their employer?
No. Applicants will be required to show their employer’s commitment, and ITE expects in most cases that participants will have their employer’s financial support. However, LeadershipITE will evaluate applicants on their leadership potential, commitment to ITE, and commitment to the profession. Some limited scholarship money may be available to support candidates who need assistance. Therefore, ability to pay should not discourage potential candidates from applying.

What are the time obligations of a participant in the program?
Participants will be expected to attend and actively participate in three two-day workshops, as well as the Spring Technical Conference and the Annual Meeting. Between workshops, participants will be expected to actively participate with fellow team members to complete small team leadership projects and class assignments

Who should apply to the LeadershipITE program?
LeadershipITE seeks individuals who have demonstrated a capacity for leadership and are strongly committed to the future of the transportation profession. Successful candidates for LeadershipITE will be those individuals with the desire to serve the Institute and are willing to commit to be a steward of the profession throughout their careers. The only minimum criterion is that participants must be a student, member, or fellow in good standing with the Institute. Professional experience by itself is not a criterion for selection. LeadershipITE selects participants based upon leadership potential, commitment to ITE, and commitment to the profession.

How does someone apply to the program?
Those interested in participating can download an application. Applications are due no later than August 12, 2013.
