Improving Data Accuracy of Roadway Departure Crashes: Practice in Virginia, USA, and Its National Implications

In this paper by Past President’s Award for Merit in Transportation recipient Ning Li and couauthor Stephen W. Read, a serious issue is raised in current roadway departure (RD) crash research and practices. Despite the importance of RD crashes, the defi nitions and identification methods of the RD crashes are inconsistent, and significant differences exist in the reported RD crash deaths between many states and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA).

Identifying Factors Affecting the Number of Students Walking or Biking to School

A Safe Routes to School (SRTS) survey was conducted for 14 elementary and middle schools in Hillsborough County, Florida, USA. The standard survey forms and inputting tools designed by the National Center for SRTS were used for both student and parent surveys in an effort to identify factors that influence whether
children walk or bike to school.
