MUTCD has been the national standard for designing and installing traffic control devices for more than 70 years. FHWA is preparing for the next edition of MUTCD, which is scheduled for publication in 2009. This feature summarizes some of the major changes in the Notice of Proposed Amendments.

Influencing Driver Behavior by Reducing Disorder

Unwanted driver behavior contributes significantly to a high number of fatalities and injuries on roadways. In one U.S. city, the reduction of illegal behavior has been attributed to the reduction of disorder within the city. Transportation agencies can adapt the techniques used to reduce disorder in that city to reduce disorder on roadways.

The year 2007 marked the emergence of a serious dialogue about the need to change the direction of the U.S. surface transportation program. Such a fundamental program reassessment has not been undertaken since the launching of the Interstate Highway Program 50 years ago.

Commercial Vehicle Driver Acceptance of Lane Departure Warning Systems

This paper discusses user acceptance and satisfaction with existing image processing-based lane departure warning systems in the United States. A survey of commercial vehicle drivers indicated a high level of satisfaction and acceptance. However, there appears to be a need for additional education of the benefits and use of the systems.
