TITLE: PROMOTING SUSTAINABLE TRANSPORTATION THROUGH SITE DESIGN: AN ITE RECOMMENDED PRACTICE
DATE: Wednesday, October 6, 2010
TIME:  3:00 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. Eastern
SITE FEE: $250 ITE Member/ $325 Non-member/$125 Student Chapter Member

CREDIT: 1.5 PDH/.2 IACET CEU/1.5 Approved AICP CM Activity
BACKGROUND:

This Web seminar demonstrates site design practices that can be applied through the site development process to promote the use of more sustainable modes of passenger travel such as walking, cycling and transit. Its goal is to identify and present features that make sites accessible to all modes of travel. It also aims to identify a range of supporting policies and actions that agencies can implement to create an atmosphere conducive to promoting sustainable transportation through site design.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

At the conclusion of the course, participants should be able to:

1) Apply site design practices to the land development process to promote the use of sustainable modes of passenger transportation such as walking, cycling and transit.
2) Describe methods involved in the preparation, review and approval of development proposals.
3) Incorporate features that make sites more accessible.
4) Identify a range of supporting policies and actions that agencies can implement to promote sustainable transportation through site design.

INSTRUCTORS:

Russell Brownlee, M.A. Sc., P.E., Transportation Safety Engineer, Giffin Koerth Forensic Engineering, Toronto,ON, Canada and Brian Hollingworth, P.E., Director, IBI Group, Toronto,ON, Canada

Russell received his master’s degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Waterloo. Russell has over 15 years experience in transportation planning, traffic engineering and road/rail safety. Russell is a past member of the Traffic Engineering Council Executive Committee and the current Chair of the Transportation Safety Council Executive Committee. In addition, Russell represents the Canadian District on the ITE International Board of Direction. Russell worked with Brian Hollingworth to develop the ITE Recommended Practice: Promoting Sustainable Transportation Through Site Design. He has also developed guidelines for school site design and operations.

Brian has been with IBI Group for 15 years where he has carried out a wide variety of studies in transportation planning, site development and sustainable urban transportation. Brian was the Project Manager for a study that led to the development of an ITE Proposed Recommended Practice entitled “Promoting Sustainable Transportation through Site Design,” a project undertaken on behalf of the Canadian Institute of Transportation Engineers. This publication has been widely distributed across Canada and the US and is used as a reference for transportation engineers and others involved in site design and development. In 2005, the project was recognized by the Transportation Association of Canada and received the Sustainable Transportation Award. Prior to working with IBI Group, Brian completed a Master of Applied Science at the University of Toronto and Bachelor of Engineering at Ryerson University. Brian is a past-president of the Toronto Section of the Institute of Transportation Engineers and is currently Chair of TAC’s Sustainable Transportation Standing Committee.
