BACKGROUND:

This Web briefing is a showcase of selected presentations from the 2009 ITE Technical Conference and Exhibit, Transportation Operations in Action, held in Phoenix, AZ in March 2009. The presentations are representative of each track—Planning, Safety, Traffic Engineering/Design and Transportation Operations. The Web briefing is being offered with support from the Federal Highway Administration’s Office of Operations.

Kenny Voorhies, Senior Associate, Cambridge Systematics, Atlanta, GA, USA

Kenny has more than 35 years of experience in traffic engineering, traffic operations and transportation planning. He has managed a wide range of projects, including managing TMC operations, data archiving and ITS planning.

Dr. A. Essam Radwan, CATSS Executive Director, University of Central Florida, Orlando, FL, USA

Dr. Radwan received a BS degree in Civil Engineering with honors from Cairo University, Egypt and a master and doctorate degrees from Purdue University. Prior to his academic position at the University of Central Florida, he taught at Virginia Tech and Arizona State. He currently serves as the Executive Associate Dean in the College of Engineering and Computer Science at UCF.

Frank D. Dobiszewski, VP of Engineering, Jen Electric, Inc., Springfield, NJ , USA

Frank Dobiszewski currently serves as Vice President of Engineering for Jen Electric, Inc., overseeing all engineering and technical aspects for the company. He is a certified IMSA Course Instructor and holds a Traffic Signal Level III certification. He is a member of the Institute of Transportation Engineers, National Council on Examinations for Engineers and Surveyors and International Municipal Signal Association.
Mr. Dobiszewski is co-authored the Traffic Control Signals chapter for the sixth edition of ITE’s Traffic Engineering Handbook. He is also part of the Project Team for the re-write of the IMSA’s Traffic Signal Maintenance Handbook.
He has over 19 years experience in traffic engineering, including traffic signal and electrical design, construction and maintenance projects for the public and private sectors. Mr. Dobiszewski offers comprehensive knowledge of traffic signal control product applications such as controller assemblies and related electronics, video detection and surveillance, conduit and wiring systems and traffic signal supports. He is proficient in the development of traffic signal design standards, specifications and construction practices for public agencies, and the development and implementation of maintenance.

Hillary Isebrands, Transportation Engineer/Researcher, Eagle, CO, USA

Hillary has been in the transportation profession for nearly 15 years. She has diverse experience as a design engineer as well as a traffic and safety engineer and researcher. Areas of expertise include modern roundabouts, highway design, public involvement, school zone safety, pedestrian safety, older drivers, planned special event operations and construction inspection.
