Harold F. Hammond Scholarship

The $3,000 scholarship is to be awarded annually based on need to a student wishing to pursue graduate study in transportation engineering.  the scholarship was established in 1993 to recognize the great contribution of Harold F. Hammond, one of the pioneers of our profession.  Harold had significant influence on shaping national transportation policy and legislation, always in the direction of improving the availability and quality of the nation's transportation services.  He was an early champion of the spirit of intermodal cooperation.

Over many years Harold gave willingly of his time to help nurture the Institute in its formative stages and served as unpaid Institute staff, devoting many hours to create the intellectual roots of our profession.  The scholarship has been endowed by Eugene A. Barton, a Fellow of ITE and a former Institute International director.  Gene said that it was his way to pay tribute to his mentor--Harold F. Hammond--who gave Gene his first job in the transportation profession, sponsored Gene for membership in the Institute and helped launch his successful career.
