The role played by transportation safety professionals:

  • Helping to save lives and prevent injuries by solving real-world safety issues
  • Contributing to improved safety and mobility for all users
  • Gaining a better understanding about interactions between human factors, the transportation environment and vehicles
  • Applying technical creativity in the pursuit of effective safety solutions

Transportation safety professionals are employed as:

  • Project Engineers (Transportation, Design, Traffic, etc.)
  • Technical Managers and Department/Bureau Chiefs (Safety, Transportation/Traffic or Pubic Works)
  • Safety Engineers/Specialists
  • Forensic Engineers
  • Academia/Research Engineers
  • Law Enforcement and Human Factors/Behavioral Specialists

Skills and analytical expertise:

  • Technical education (engineering, physics, mathematics, etc.)
  • Knowledge/familiarity with applying advanced mathematics and statistics
  • Strong problem identification and problem solving skills
  • Ability to work with multidisciplinary groups

The type of projects that might be undertaken by transportation safety professionals and their value to communities:

  • Organizational Policy Development (such as contributing to a State Strategic Highway Safety Plan)
  • Project Planning and Technical Studies (including network screening, crash analysis, and preliminary design)
  • Field Work/Site Visits to conduct Road Safety Audits and In-Service Safety Performance Reviews
  • Opportunities to collaborate with multimodal stakeholders (pedestrians, bicyclists, schools, work zones, etc.)
  • Involvement with community and educational efforts to enhance awareness of safety issues
  • Conducting post-implementation safety effectiveness reviews and research

  • Federal Government (USDOT/Federal Highway Administration, Transportation Association of Canada, etc.)
  • State and Local Government (State DOT or Provincial Transport Ministry, Toll Road Authorities, Public Works Departments, etc.)

  • Non-Governmental Organizations (ITE, AASHTO, IIHS, AAA-FTS, ATSSA, etc.)
  • Private Practice/Consulting (general transportation and safety-related specializations, forensic, etc.)
