In most civil engineering programs, we have about 40 hours with students to introduce them to transportation engineering, about one working week. This material on this website focuses on the question of mapping the learning domain for transportation engineering in order to help educators determine how to spend those 40 hours. Background on the effort and the membership of the newly formed Education Council Curriculum Subcommittee are provided along with the results of the initial effort.
Organizing knowledge can be done many different ways. Earlier efforts have conducted surveys of both transportation professionals and educators to indentify the topics that should be covered in an introductory class. This effort has focused on creating course learning objectives, knowledge tables for key topics, and a visual aid to help students tie the various topics together called the transportation delivery process.
