Comprehensive signal retiming for isolated signals or coordinated traffic signal systems can significantly reduce delays, travel time, fuel consumption and emissions. It is one of the most cost-effective methods to quickly alleviate traffic congestion and improve traffic safety. However, according to the National Traffic Signal Report Card, agencies are unable to regularly retime the signals, adjust signal timing plans and maintain signal timing inventories due to limited resources. The panel of experts on this subcommittee can reduce some of the agencies" burden of research and exploration and can assist practitioners with any issues related to traffic signal timing. The scope of the subcommittee includes:
- Signal warrants
- Signal design
- Traffic data collection methods
- Signal retiming strategies and best practices
- Signal timing optimization
- Isolated signals and signal coordination
- Pedestrian signal timing design
- Adaptive signal control algorithms
- Signal timings for special needs
- Signal timing integration across jurisdictions
- Signal timing for incident management and detour routes
- Signal timing for work zones
- Signal pre-emption and priority
