Bevins
was a founder of the Southern Section, ITE (now District 5) in the late
'50s; he was also a founder of the Georgia Division, ITE (now Georgia
Section). He has served on,
and chaired numerous ITE committees at both the local and national
levels. Among his many elected ITE offices were President, Southern
Section and Director, District 5.
Professionally,
Bevins served as City Traffic Engineer of Atlanta, GA for some 30 years.
He was appointed for terms under four mayors, serving as an
appointed official longer than any other person in the City's history.
During his profession service, Bevins was highly recognized as an
innovator with pioneering efforts in the technical areas of staggered
hours work, reversible lane control and computerized signal systems, as
well as many others.
Bevins
fostered the advancement of ITE and the traffic engineering profession
by his ardent support and encouragement of subordinates, work associates
and professional peers. Typical
of this support is the accomplishments of staff subordinates.
Karl
Bevins retired as Atlanta's City Traffic Engineer in 1978.
