Task Force Meeting Highlights
ITE Climate Change & Energy Task Force
The ITE Climate Change & Energy Task Force met on Monday during the conference. Its mission is to “facilitate transportation solutions that incorporate global climate change and energy concerns spanning the range of ITE member interests.”
Discussion focused on the need for ITE to be proactive in assuming a leadership role in the development of best practices related to the application of energy conservation and “going green” principles in the design, management and operations of traffic and transportation facilities. Specific actions the task force will take toward the achievement of this goal include but are not limited to:
- identifying key issues of concern that will be included in the Technical Program for the ITE 2010 Technical Conference to address transportation for the 21st century as related to the environment, energy and economy;
- conducting a survey of the general membership seeking input as to the key climate and energy issues most impacted by transportation;
- incorporating climate change and energy issues affecting transportation into all aspects of traffic and transportation engineering and design;
- creating an ITE Web site devoted to climate change and energy; and
- developing an ITE Web briefing addressing how operational strategies (i.e. traffic signal timing) can best be used to mitigate energy impacts, emissions and resulting pollution.
Ethics Task Force Meeting
The ITE Ethics Task Force met under the auspices of the newly elected chair, Jenifer Rosales. The objective of this task force is to ensure that ethical issues remain at the forefront of the ITE membership. Short articles for ITE Journal, conversation circles, Web seminars, dynamic speaker presentations, lecture series and other training opportunities are among several potential action items proposed for completion by this task force in the coming year. If you are interested in participating in these activities, please send a one-page statement of interest and brief resume to Natalia Vlasov at nvlasov@ite.org by April 15, 2009, to be considered for an appointment on this task force.
