Sight distance is a critical component of designing safe transportation facilities. The types and definitions of sight distance have changed over the years, as have the assumptions that they are based upon. This training module will give an overview of the three primary types of sight distance as defined by the AASHTO Policy on Geometric Design of Highways and Streets, discuss how they should be applied to roadway and intersection design, give examples of each and discuss safety impacts. At the conclusion of the seminar participants will be able to: Define the basis of general sight distance and types; Describe assumptions and applications of stopping sight distance, decision sight distance and intersection sight distance; and Describe the measured and potential safety of sight distance. The seminar will provide basic ideas to reduce risks that lead to tort liability lawsuits and provide a better defense if sued. The overview will cover risk management and the knowledge needed to armor against wasted expenditures on damage claims. This seminar covers the basics of planning an organized, audience-focused presentation. It will focus on a presentation design process that will improve the impact and clarity of presentations, making them more interesting and relevant to the intended audience.
